16 Two tone powder coating on a Harley gas tank

Custom Cez tries out a very difficult two tone powder coat scheme on his gas tank.

In this 2 part "diy, how to" tutorial Custom Cez powder coats his Harley Davidson softail gas tank.

Part 1 - THE FIRST LAYER

We start with the gas tank cleaning and rust removal with the use of muriatic acid. The the first coat of paint goes on. Up to here, all is good... everyday stuff...
The Custom Cez continues with setting up the mask using high temperature tape and prepping for the second trip in the oven...

What did we do:

  • tank cleaning
  • rust removal with muriatic acid
  • first powder coating layer
  • creation of the design on the tank
  • masking with high temp tape

Part 2 - THE SECOND LAYER

After finishing the masking process over the first layer of paint Custom Cez proceeds with applying the second layer of color, wrinkle black. After curing, during the removal of the protective mask, Custom Cez realizes that the first layer of paint has melted during curing and has taken the shape of the masking tape, completely ruining the paint job. Cez needs to start the process all over again starting with stripping the tanks to bring them back to the bare metal.
The second time around Custom Cez finds a way to finish the paint job properly. Do you want to know how? Then you need to watch the episode!

 What did we do:

  • completed the masking process
  • sprayed second layer of powder
  • curing of the second layer
  • stripping of the tanks
  • second attempt
